Histological Assessment of Vaginal Wall at Different Stages of Pelvic Organ Prolapse

چکیده

Hypothesis / aims of study Collagen is ubiquitous in the human body and it is the main component of connective tissue. Several different types of collagen have been identified and is known that it is strongly represented in the vaginal wall and endopelvic fascia. Therefore collagen is the main component of the pelvic supporting structures and Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is the clinical manifestation of a muscular and connective tissue damage while pelvic floor reconstructive surgery mostly uses damaged fascial structures for primary repair of POP. The role of collagen in the physiopathology of POP has been studied with conflicting results, being difficult to distinguish the cause from the effect and to standardize the samples (1). In this study it has been evaluated the microscopic morphology of the anterior and posterior vaginal wall of patients affected by different stages of POP.

Biomechanical properties and associated collagen composition in vaginal tissue of women with pelvic organ prolapse.

PURPOSE The pelvic tissue of women with pelvic organ prolapse is stiffer than that of controls but there are scant data on the collagen composition that corresponds to these mechanical properties. We evaluated human vaginal wall stiffness using the novel scanning haptic microscope and correlated these measurements to collagen expression in women with and without pelvic organ prolapse. In this s...

Mesh Surgery for Anterior Vaginal Wall Prolapse: A Meta-analysis.

Purpose Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a major health issue worldwide, affecting 6-8% of women. The most affected site is the anterior vaginal wall. Multiple procedures and surgical techniques have been used, with or without the use of vaginal meshes, due to common treatment failure, reoperations, and complication rates in some studies. Methods Systematic review of the literature and meta-analy...

بررسی فراوانی پرولاپس اعضای لگنی و ریسک فاکتورهای آن در زنان یائسه مراجعه کننده به بیمارستان‌های دانشگاه علوم پزشکی ایران در سال1383

Background & Aim: Pelvic organ prolapse which is defined as displacement of bladder, uterus or rectum from their normal position downward is very common in elder women and causes significant morbidity. It is necessary to have a standard staging to investigate this problem, factors influencing it, and the effect of different therapeutic procedures on the course of disease. The aim of this st...

How Accurate Is Preoperative Evaluation of Pelvic Organ Prolapse in Women Undergoing Vaginal Reconstruction Surgery?

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the differences between the in-office and intraoperative techniques used to evaluate pelvic organ prolapse. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective study included 25 women undergoing vaginal reconstruction surgery including vaginal hysterectomy for pelvic organ prolapse. The outpatient pelvic and site-specific vaginal examination was performed in the lithotomy position with ...

Ovine multiparity is associated with diminished vaginal muscularis, increased elastic fibres and vaginal wall weakness: implication for pelvic organ prolapse

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is a major clinical burden affecting 25% of women, with vaginal delivery a major contributing factor. We hypothesised that increasing parity weakens the vagina by altering the extracellular matrix proteins and smooth muscle thereby leading to POP vulnerability. We used a modified POP-quantification (POP-Q) system and a novel pressure sensor to measure vaginal wall we...
